The Union Public Service Commission has released the Annual Calendar 2027, and for serious civil services aspirants it is the single most consequential planning document of the year. Released in the third week of May 2026, the calendar locks in every notification, application window, and examination date that UPSC will conduct during the 2027 cycle — from the Civil Services Examination (CSE) and Indian Forest Service (IFS), to the National Defence Academy (NDA & NA), Combined Defence Services (CDS), Engineering Services (ESE), and the Combined Medical Services (CMS).
If you are starting your UPSC preparation today, this calendar tells you exactly how much runway you have. If you are mid-preparation, it tells you when the gun fires. This article walks through every confirmed date, the strategic implications for each examination, and a study-week back-calculation so you can build a preparation calendar that ends on examination day — not after it.
UPSC CSE 2027 — The Headline Dates
The Civil Services Examination is the centrepiece of every UPSC calendar release. For 2027, the Commission has confirmed the following non-negotiable dates:
| Event | Date (2027) | Window |
|---|---|---|
| Notification & Online Application Open | 13 January 2027 (Wednesday) | Day 0 of the registration window |
| Last Date to Apply | 2 February 2027 (Tuesday), 6 PM | 21-day window |
| Application Correction Window | 3 February — 9 February 2027 | 7 days (tentative, per UPSC pattern) |
| CSE Preliminary Examination | 23 May 2027 (Sunday) | Single-day, two papers |
| CSE Main Examination | 20 August 2027 onwards | 5 consecutive days |
Three numbers matter most:
- 20 days to apply. The application window opens on 13 January and closes 2 February at 6 PM. Aspirants who wait until the last 72 hours routinely face server overload — apply in the first week.
- 130 days between notification and Prelims. 13 January to 23 May is your final-stretch sprint, not your foundation phase. Foundation must already be done by January 2027.
- 89 days between Prelims and Mains. 23 May to 20 August is the standard UPSC window — treat it as a 12-week answer-writing sprint.
Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination 2027
The IFS Preliminary Examination is held jointly with the CSE Prelims — same paper, same hall, same day. Candidates who want IFS must tick the IFS box on the CSE application form. Therefore:
- IFS Prelims 2027 = 23 May 2027 (combined with CSE Prelims).
- IFS Mains 2027 will follow approximately 4–5 months after CSE Mains, on UPSC’s standard pattern. The Commission usually announces IFS Mains dates separately around July/August 2027. Expect a late-November 2027 start, in line with the 2026 cycle pattern.
- If IFS is your primary target, your optional choice strategy locks in immediately at application stage — you cannot change optionals between Prelims and Mains for IFS.
Other UPSC 2027 Examinations — Snapshot
While CSE dominates the conversation, UPSC will conduct roughly 14 major examinations across 2027. The Commission released the broader calendar in the same announcement on 21 May 2026. Aspirants targeting any of these should mark their notification and exam windows now:
| Examination | Notification (Tentative) | Exam Date (2027) |
|---|---|---|
| NDA & NA Examination (I) | December 2026 | April 2027 |
| CDS Examination (I) | December 2026 | February 2027 |
| Civil Services (Preliminary) | 13 January 2027 | 23 May 2027 |
| Indian Forest Service (Prelims) | 13 January 2027 (via CSE) | 23 May 2027 (combined) |
| Engineering Services (Prelims) | September 2026 | February 2027 |
| Combined Geo-Scientist (Prelims) | September 2026 | February 2027 |
| Combined Medical Services | April 2027 | July 2027 |
| NDA & NA Examination (II) | May 2027 | September 2027 |
| CDS Examination (II) | May 2027 | September 2027 |
| Civil Services (Main) | — | 20 August 2027 (5 days) |
| IES/ISS Examination | April 2027 | July 2027 |
| SO/Steno (GD-B/GD-I) LDCE | September 2027 | December 2027 |
The exact dates for non-CSE examinations are published on the official UPSC calendar PDF; aspirants must cross-check the UPSC Exam Calendar page for any minor revisions before notification day.
Why the 2027 Calendar Matters Right Now (Even if You’re Targeting 2026)
You might think the 2027 calendar is a problem for next year. It isn’t. Three reasons it matters this week:
1. CSE 2026 candidates have a Plan B baked in
If the CSE 2026 Prelims result does not go your way, the gap to the CSE 2027 application opening is just 7–8 months. That is enough time to rebuild Prelims-focused revision, but only if you start in July 2026 the day after the answer key is finalised. The calendar tells you not to lose June and July to grief.
2. Fresh starters have an exact runway
If you are picking up UPSC preparation today (26 May 2026), your runway to CSE 2027 Prelims is 363 days. That is one full preparation cycle on the standard 12-month model. Anything more than 12 months invites stale notes and stale syllabus. Anything less than 9 months and you compromise Mains depth.
3. Working professionals get a planning anchor
The 130-day notification-to-Prelims window means working aspirants need 8 months of foundation done before the notification drops. That puts your serious-mode start date no later than May 2026 — which is exactly this month.
Back-Calculation: From 23 May 2027 to Today
If you reverse-engineer the calendar from Prelims day, your 363-day runway breaks down like this:
| Phase | Duration | Window | Goal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Foundation 1.0 — Static Syllabus | 180 days | May 2026 — Oct 2026 | NCERTs + 1 standard book per GS area |
| Foundation 2.0 — Current Affairs Layering | 90 days | Nov 2026 — Jan 2027 | Daily newspaper, monthly compilation |
| Prelims Sprint | 90 days | Feb 2027 — Apr 2027 | PYQ + Mock + Revision Loop |
| Final Revision & CSAT | 20 days | 3 May — 22 May 2027 | Last-mile capsules, mental rehearsal |
| D-Day | 1 day | 23 May 2027 | Prelims Paper I (9:30 AM) + CSAT (2:30 PM) |
| Mains Sprint | 89 days | 24 May — 19 Aug 2027 | Optional revision + answer writing |
| Mains | 5 days | 20 — 24 Aug 2027 (tentative) | 9 papers |
Use this table as your master timeline. Print it. Stick it above your study desk. Every micro-plan you build — daily, weekly, monthly — should be reverse-engineered from these markers.
Application Day Checklist (13 January 2027)
The 21-day application window closes faster than aspirants expect. To avoid the panic-apply pattern that crashes the One-Time Registration (OTR) portal in the final 48 hours:
- Complete OTR before 13 January 2027. The OTR portal at upsconline.nic.in is open year-round. Do this in December 2026.
- Keep ready: latest passport-size photograph (within 10 days of upload), signature, and a photo ID (Aadhaar, PAN, Voter ID, or Driving Licence).
- Confirm category certificate validity (SC/ST/OBC/EWS/PwBD). OBC and EWS certificates issued before 1 April of the application year are typically invalid.
- Decide your service preference order before opening the form. Once submitted, IAS > IPS > IFS preference order cannot be edited.
- Pay the examination fee via debit card / credit card / UPI / net banking. The fee for General/OBC is ₹100; SC/ST/PwBD/Women candidates are exempt.
- Save the printout and registration ID. You will need it for every subsequent download — admit card, answer key portal, marksheet.
What Has Changed Versus the 2026 Calendar
- Notification moved earlier by 9 days. CSE 2026 notification dropped on 22 January 2026. CSE 2027 drops on 13 January 2027 — aspirants get 9 extra days of clarity before the application window closes.
- Prelims one day earlier. CSE 2026 Prelims fell on 24 May (Sunday). CSE 2027 Prelims is 23 May (Sunday). The Commission has held the fourth-Sunday-of-May pattern.
- Mains starts on 20 August. CSE 2026 Mains starts 21 August. The Commission has compressed the gap by one day — effectively preserving the 88-day Prelims-to-Mains corridor.
- Provisional Answer Key reform continues. The reform UPSC introduced for CSE 2026 — releasing the Prelims provisional answer key right after the exam with a representation window — is expected to continue for CSE 2027 and beyond.
Vacancy Projection for CSE 2027
Vacancy figures are notified only on Notification Day (13 January 2027). However, based on the last three cycles, the expected vacancy band is:
- CSE 2024: 1056 vacancies notified
- CSE 2025: 979 vacancies notified
- CSE 2026: 933 vacancies notified
- CSE 2027 (projected): 900–1000 vacancies, subject to DoPT indents from cadres
Vacancies have trended downward marginally year-on-year as the central government rationalises cadre intake under the Mission Karmayogi framework. Aspirants should plan around a competitive intake of approximately 950 posts split across IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, IAAS, IRTS and 19 other Group-A & B services.
Strategy by Available Runway
Match your start date today to the right preparation model:
| Runway to CSE 2027 Prelims | Recommended Model |
|---|---|
| 12+ months (i.e. starting before May 2026) | Standard foundation + practice + revision model |
| 9–12 months (May — August 2026) | Compressed foundation, heavy NCERT-first, parallel current affairs from Day 1 |
| 6–9 months (September — November 2026) | Skip optional foundation, focus only on Prelims-relevant GS; defer Mains depth to post-Prelims |
| < 6 months (December 2026 onwards) | Treat CSE 2027 as a familiarisation attempt; build for CSE 2028 in parallel |
